A Home Monitoring Solution for Seniors

As baby boomers get older, more and more of their sons and daughters will look to technology to help keep them healthy and comfortable in their homes for as long as possible. And a Virginia-based company called BeClose hopes to be at the forefront of this trend.

What BeClose has created is a wireless monitoring system for the home that can keep outside caregivers abreast of events inside it via sensors and software specifically designed to keep tabs on someone. There are sensors that monitor entire rooms, sensors for chairs, beds and toilets, and even a sensor that can monitor a cabinet, refrigerator or front door. Each sensor is tied into a central monitoring device which displays the data in an easy-to-read dashboard that caregivers can monitor to check out sleep patterns, movement and even weight. Caregivers can also set parameters for certain sensors and be alerted when an anomaly occurs. For example, a caregiver can set BeClose to send an email, text or place a phone call if the front door opens between the hours of 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. The system can also accommodate emergency buttons in locations throughout the house where accidents are most likely to occur, like in a bathroom or on a staircase.

The BeClose system starts at $299, which includes the base station and three sensors, and also requires a $49 monthly charge for around-the-clock monitoring. That may seem pricey, but compared to the thousands of dollars per month that many living facilities charge, the BeClose system is quite affordable. You can find out more on the BeClose website.
